Vienna
Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria. It was originally a trading post for the Celts on the military border of the Danube river, the Romans arrived around 15 BC and call it fort Vindobona after the Celtic tribe Vinid. The settlement grew and vineyards were introduced and by the 3rd and 4rd centuries, a town had developed. The Babenburg dynasty had ruled and ended in 1246 and a long dispute broke out on who was next to rule. The Habsburg dynasty when the Count Rudolf came aboard then assumed power. The Habsburgs ruled for 640 years.(1273-1918).During the reign of Rudolf IV - the cities first university was established and the foundation of a future cathedral was laid.
Then the Austro- Hungarian Empire came about in 1804 when the Napoleonic wars struck and Vienna became the capital of Austrian Empire. In 1814 it hosted the Congress of Vienna. The city became the center of classical music. The 18th century was the golden age for the city with Baroque architecture, civil reform and a revolution of music. Mozart spent the last 10 years of his life and it was during this time he created most of his famous works. Many other famous musicians also lived in Vienna.
Many sights are too many for the short time we had in Vienna. However we did get to see the Hapsburg Palace and ride the Ringstrasse displaying the many buildings , shops and parks.
Horse Carriage at Palace - looks like either the horse on the right was tired or needed a hug!
