Durnstein, Austria
The name means dry stone upon which a medieval castle was built. Our guide reminded me of a joyful Brun Hilda, very fun and informative. The steep riverbanks protected the site against flooding. (which is a problem all along the Danube) The roads and river could be easily closed off because it is located in the lower part of the valley and protect against invaders. However it also made it an ideal place for kidnapping. (and tolls) . The famous Richard the lion hearted was held prisoner for ransom in 1193. The songs he sang were duplicated and it was soon known that he was captive and the Duke sent the ransom.
The castle was demolished by the Swedes in 1645 but the ruins can still be seen. the Parish Church is a great landmark to not only locals but ships sailing along the Danube. Originally part of the Augustine monastery, the chapel was reconstructed in the baroque style and the church tower is considered to be one of the famous landmarks in the Danube Valley.
It is a charming wine village with cobblestone streets and shops and is know as "The Pearl of the Wachau."
