Sightseeing in Prague
New Town
Our hotel was close to the center and the main square - many shops and cafes
Lots of things going on - on St Charles Bridge and at either end! Exciting place to be!
Prague more sights and the afternoon of shopping and eating!
Our bus and walking tour wore us all out but it was full and interesting.
It included
Old Town (Staré Město) and Josefov
The Astronomical Clock and Old Town City Hall
The Gothic Church of Our Lady before from the 14th century with 80 m high towers
The vaulted Gothic Old New Synagogue of 1270
Old Jewish Cemetery
Powder Tower (Prašná brána), a Gothic tower of the old city gates
Spanish Synagogue with its beautiful interior
Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) with gothic and baroque architectural styles
The art nouveau Municipal House, a major civic landmark and concert hall known for its Art Nouveau architectural style and political history in the Czech Republic.
Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, with an extensive collections including glass, furniture, textile, toys, Art Nouveau, Cubism and Art Deco
Clam-Gallas Palace, a baroque palace from 1713
The Astronomical Clock, built in to one side of the Old Town Hall Tower, dates from the 15th century.
To fully appreciate the clock's intricate construction, join the crowd in front of the tower to watch the procession of the Twelve Apostles: on the hour, every hour, a small trap door opens and Christ marches out ahead of his disciples, while the skeleton of death tolls the bell to a defiant statue of a Turk.
Below the Astronomical Clock are 12 medallions with the signs of the zodiac, added by Josef Manes in 1865.
The Old Town Hall Tower, built in 1338, is one of the most striking buildings in Prague. Inside is a staircase and an elevator. For a fee, visitors can climb or ride to the top to experience terrific views over the Old Town Square and the rest of the Old Town.
In 1364 the Old Town Hall Tower was joined to a private house adjoining it, which in turn was knocked into other houses beside that. This amalgamation of buildings became known as the 'Old Town Hall'.
Extensive renovation in 1470 further integrated the various houses of the Old Town Hall. And all the buildings were remodeled in the Gothic style.
Today the Old Town Hall houses the primary Prague Tourist Information Centre in the reception area, and hosts civic ceremonies in some of its many historical halls.
For a fee, visitors can visit the historical halls as well. (and go up to the tower)
The OLD TOWN SQUARE
Where does the true heart of Prague beat? On the Old Town Square of course! It is precisely here that winding lanes of the Old Town run, in order to spill out onto the most beautiful square in Prague. The elegant tower of the Town Hall with the world famous astronomical clock, the proud silhouette of the fairytale Týn Cathedral, the monumental Church of St. Nicholas and countless multicolored houses of many styles.
A little shopping and stopped at the pirate café for some local food - risotto and spaetzel. Friendly pirate Matthew greeted us and made us feel at home.
