Port of Call - Linz and Salzburg
Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and the gateway to Austria. Prior to becoming the imperial capital under Frederich III from 1489-1493 the city had a storied past. Originally it was a fortified Celtic village I the 1st century AD , the romans took it over and named it Lentia. It was a major medieval trading enter under the control of the bishop of Passau. Later it was taken over by the Babenbergs. the town came under Bavarian rule in 8th century and the name was changed to Linz.
Salzburg is a picturesque town full of fairytale castles, music and history. Birthplace of Mozart and Herbert von Karajan. It also inspired the Christmas carol "Silent Night." It was known as Juvavum by the romans but eventually got its name by the locals who worked the local salt mines. It is located on the Salzach River. In 1800 Napoleon rid the city of the last prince- bishop. It was held by Barvaria until it was awarded to Austria in 1816. Mirabellgarten is home to the garden, fountains and also the statue were also in "The Sound of Music."
